With much sadness and deep regret, the PHOS laboratory announces the loss of our friend and colleague Nusrat Hussain who passed away last weekend after a long illness that she tackled bravely and with dignity. She was only 46 years old. Nusrat (our Nus) was much liked, always smiling and a long-standing member of PHOS. She joined us in 2002 after graduating in Biomedical Sciences (Institut Paul Lambin). Nusrat was always a sunshine in our laboratory and an example of both technical rigour and character. Her technical expertise in performing enzyme assays and high quality immunoblots was instrumental in developing a research topic on the role of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in metabolic depression in exotic animals such as hibernators and anoxia tolerant turtles. Several papers were published on this theme, but Nusrat was also co-author on numerous other papers by helping PhD students and post-doctoral members with their research projects on AMPK. In 2011, Nusrat obtained a Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences. From her memoire on the role of protein kinase B in mediating effects of insulin on metabolism in white adipose tissue, a Biochemical Journal paper was published with Nusrat as first author. In 2017 Nusrat left PHOS because of her health and sadly she never returned to our laboratory. We will miss her enormously. In Nusrat's memory, PHOS has initiated a fund raising effort to make a donation to La Fondation Contre le Cancer.
